Plan Ahead

Trip Essentials

Visa & Entry
Travelers from Visa Waiver countries need an ESTA ($21 online, submitted at least 72 hours ahead). Citizens outside the Visa Waiver Program need a B1/B2 visa — expect processing to span weeks. Get the paperwork in early because tournament demand will be heavy.
No visa is required for most passports if you stay under 180 days. A tourist permit (FMM) is issued on arrival, or you can apply online ahead of travel. Going to matches in both Mexico and the US requires separate entry authorisation per country.
Visa-exempt nationals need an eTA ($7 CAD, applied online). If your nationality requires a full visa, apply well in advance. Turnaround is generally fast but can lag around major events. eTAs are passport-linked and valid for a 5-year window.
Currency & Costs
US Dollar (USD) is used. Credit and debit cards are accepted almost universally. Expect to tip: 18-20% at sit-down restaurants, $1-2 per drink at bars. Meal budgets: $15-25 at casual restaurants, $8-15 for fast food. Stadium concessions cost noticeably more.
Mexican Peso (MXN) is used. While USD is taken across tourist zones, paying in pesos lands a better exchange rate. Plan on tipping 10-15%. Local-restaurant meals run $5-10, which makes Mexico the most affordable host country. ATMs are widely available.
CAD is the currency. Card payments — contactless included — are accepted everywhere. 15-20% is the standard restaurant tip. Meal pricing tracks the US, around $15-25 per plate. Be aware that Canadian shelf prices are pre-tax, so total cost arrives 13-15% above the listed menu price.
Weather (June-July)
Weather varies a lot from city to city. Southern venues (Miami 32°C, Houston 35°C, Dallas 36°C) are hot, humid affairs. The West Coast stays milder and drier: LA 25°C, San Francisco 18°C, Seattle 22°C. The East Coast runs warm and humid: New York 29°C, Philadelphia 30°C, Boston 27°C. Sunscreen, a hat, and steady hydration are key for outdoor stadiums.
Rainy weather sets in from June. Mexico City sits at 2,200m, so daytime hovers around 25°C while evenings drop noticeably. Pack layered clothes and a rain shell. Both Guadalajara and Monterrey are warmer (30-33°C) and more humid. Afternoon thunderstorms are a regular occurrence, usually brief.
Peak weather of the calendar year. Around 26°C is typical for Toronto, with occasional humid stretches. Vancouver's average is about 22°C, with up to 16 hours of daylight and minimal rain. Conditions are pleasant for outdoor events in both cities. Pack light layers for evening match times.
Practical Info
Type A/B sockets, 120V. English is the main spoken language. Uber and Lyft cover the full host-city list. Most hotels, cafes, and airports provide free WiFi. For mobile data, buy an eSIM or prepaid SIM at the airport. Public-transit quality differs widely — excellent in New York, limited in Dallas and Houston.
Power: Type A/B plugs at 127V (US-compatible). Spanish is the primary language but tourist areas and stadium zones see plenty of English. Ride-hailing via Uber and DiDi works well across the three host cities. Pick up a local SIM (Telcel or AT&T Mexico) at the airport for cheap data and calls.
Type A/B outlets, 120V (US-compatible). English in Toronto, English plus French in Vancouver. Uber covers both cities. Public transit works well — TTC in Toronto, SkyTrain in Vancouver, both stadium-connected. Canadian carriers are expensive; consider an eSIM or prepaid plan as a visitor.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I book World Cup 2026 flights from Poland?

December 2025 through March 2026 is the cleanest PLN window. LOT opens summer transatlantic inventory in late autumn, and the cheapest economy buckets on WAW-JFK, WAW-ORD and WAW-MIA sell out fast — by mid-April most of the lowest fare classes have closed. For group-stage matches (11 to 27 June) book by February. For knockout rounds through the 19 July final, January is safer: diaspora return demand pulls cheap seats out of inventory in late May and June, and LOT's seat pitch on their 787-9 fleet makes every fare class competitive.

Is Warsaw or Kraków cheaper for transatlantic flights?

Warsaw Chopin wins for frequency and destination breadth — four direct US routes plus seasonal Los Angeles makes WAW the hub for Polish long-haul. Kraków is useful for fans in southern Poland and Slovakia, with LOT direct service to Chicago and JFK seasonally. For matches in US cities not served directly from Kraków (Miami, Boston, West Coast venues), connecting via Warsaw on LOT usually matches flying WAW direct. Fans in western Poland (Poznań, Wrocław, Szczecin) should also price connecting via Berlin or Frankfurt — Lufthansa fares from BER and FRA can undercut LOT when booked more than 3 months out.

Do Polish citizens need a visa for the USA, Mexico or Canada?

No full visa. Poland joined the US Visa Waiver Program in November 2019, so Polish passport holders qualify for ESTA (USD 21, valid 2 years). Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov at least 72 hours before departure. For Canada, apply for eTA (CAD 7, valid 5 years) at canada.ca. For Mexico, no pre-arrival authorisation is needed — a tourist permit is issued on arrival for up to 180 days. Check passport validity (the USA requires your passport to be valid for the length of your stay, no 6-month rule for Poland).

Why does LOT direct to Chicago matter for Polish fans?

Chicago is home to roughly 1.5 million people of Polish descent, and LOT's WAW-ORD nonstop is one of the most heavily booked transatlantic routes out of Warsaw. This has three consequences for World Cup fans: first, pricing is usually sharper than LOT-JFK or LOT-EWR because of scale; second, the flight almost always sells out months before peak dates; third, Chicago is within easy domestic reach of multiple host cities — short hops on Southwest or American to Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Philadelphia or Atlanta are cheap and frequent. A WAW-ORD round trip plus separate US domestic segments is often the cheapest Polish-origin World Cup itinerary.

How do LOT Miles & More points work for redemptions?

LOT uses Miles & More jointly with Lufthansa, Austrian, Swiss and Brussels Airlines, so your points pool across the Star Alliance Central European block. Polish fans accumulating points through co-branded cards (Millennium, Santander or PKO) can redeem for transatlantic LOT flights at 35,000 to 60,000 points one-way in economy during peak season plus taxes. Partner redemptions on United from Frankfurt, Newark or Chicago can extend your options when LOT direct is sold out. Avoid peak-date premium-cabin redemptions — the points cost typically doubles, and cash premium-economy fares from Warsaw are often better value.

What happens if I want to combine US and Canadian matches?

LOT makes this easy. Book an open-jaw itinerary — Warsaw to Chicago or JFK outbound, return from Toronto — at pricing that typically matches a US-only round trip. From Chicago, LOT also flies seasonal to Toronto, or you can hop on Air Canada, United or a US low-cost carrier. Your ESTA and eTA cover multiple entries each, so a US-Canada-US-Canada routing during the tournament works without reapplying. If you are adding a Mexico match, route Polish-airline-to-USA, then Volaris or Aeroméxico to Mexico City or Monterrey — much cheaper than trying to find Polish-origin nonstops to Mexico.

Do I need travel insurance beyond my Polish NFZ card?

Yes, essential. NFZ (Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia) and your EHIC card do not cover medical treatment in the USA, and a US emergency-room visit can cost PLN 150,000 or more. Buy a tournament-length travel medical policy with at least PLN 1 million cover, trip cancellation, and baggage. PZU, Warta, Allianz Assistance and Europa all sell Poland-compatible policies from PLN 120 to 400. Confirm USA is explicitly covered and that medical repatriation by air ambulance is included — that single clause can save PLN 300,000+ if something goes seriously wrong. Premium card coverage (mBank World Elite, Millennium Black) is often capped too low for American medical bills.
